Solve strategy problems

I work with you to define the strategies and processes that enhance experiences. Whether you are working to modernize the way you do training in the digital age or are looking to better understand your audience, I can help. I work closely with you and your teams to develop a comprehensive digital strategy that is tailored to your unique needs and goals.

Solve difficult strategy problems

Standards are necessary, but innovations require new standards.

I don’t just follow the standards, I've helped to make them. I wrote some of the first books on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (the languages behind all web designs) and have created, advanced, and innovated new ways to apply those standards in digital designs.

I bring that unique expertise to help you build your own digital strategy. I can help you enhance your value online, advise you on which products or services to trust, and push your ideas to their full potential.

What my clients say…

Jason is an experienced design leader. He is passionate about catalyzing the creative growth of his colleagues and the broader community. I particularly appreciate the joy and humor he brings to his work. I've benefited tremendously from Jason's creative judgment and would love to collaborate with him again in the future.

MM, Innovation Lead

Jason is an amazingly knowledgeable designer, and takes great pleasure in teaching what he knows to others. As design lead I found him to be not only a good resource for direction and strategy as it related to my projects, but also for me personally as a designer. He's always eager to teach and offer advice, but he knows when to step back and let a designer trust his own instincts. That's an uncommon trait, and a welcome one.

TE, User Experience Designer

Jason certainly and repeatedly proved he has the ability to conceive and execute killer online user experiences. And what is most impressive about Jason is his clear role as a thought leader in the realm of Web standards. He firmly believes in technology and design elegantly coming together for consumers and is the real deal relative to how to leverage CSS and code to achieve excellence in the presentation layer.

PR, Digital Strategist & CEO

Jason develops strong, trusting relationships with different teams, and takes personal accountability to ensure that he provides high levels of project delivery and operational support. He has a balance of business and IT knowledge, understands business needs, and translates them into UI/UX world. Jason brings a warm, pleasant demeanor to his role, and is liked and respected by his teammates. I would highly recommend Jason as he is a great asset to any organization!

NG, Portfolio Manager

Jason has been a top rated speaker at many conferences and events. His ability to take concepts and ideas and relate them to a specific audience is a special gift and I look forward to seeing this capability blossom as he moves forward in his career. The fact that he is always working on the next book or workshop idea and following through on them is testament that Jason believes that our ideas are meant to be shared — a trait that will make any attendee, co-worker, company and industry all the better. I am happy that I've had the privilege to work with and get to know Jason and recommend that others do the some.

PE, Founder & CEO

Jason is an incredibly creative teacher who uses engaging and effective storytelling methods to convey important UX principles. Through the use of simple animations, I learned a lot about the art of storytelling and how to use it to create compelling user experiences. Additionally, Jason's course helped me improve my presentation skills, which has been invaluable in my career. Overall, I can confidently say that Jason is an outstanding instructor who has made a lasting impact on my understanding of storytelling and user experience design.

PK, UX Student

I've had the pleasure of having Jason as a professor during my last year at Drexel. He taught a class on Storytelling and UX. The skills, methods and frameworks he shared with me were instrumental in getting my first few jobs after school. Two areas that really stood out to me were elements of storytelling and how we could create a compelling narrative arc, and how to create journey maps that could be valuable in the design process.

PK, UX Student

Jason and I had a great session! He listened to where I am at and provided two approaches for me to choose from. We did an exercise using design thinking to resolve my career problems. I look forward to seeing the outcome of this journey!

He took the time to understand my background and experience, making a concerted effort to know the kind of a person I am. It is a pleasure to have a mentor who is knowledgeable and kind :)

TS, Sr. UX Designer

Jason’s knowledge about the field is so vast, you can throw anything at him and he’ll hit you with a big list of well-thought out ideas. 45 minutes went by in a jiffy. He is incredibly articulate and as a junior designer, this is exactly the guidance I needed. I look forward to learning more from him.

TR, UX Designer

Jason's been awesome in helping me with my design portfolio. He looked at my work and gave me thorough feedback and really good advice on how to improve it. We also discussed salary negotiation and interview preparation as I'm currently in the job search. What truly sets Jason apart is his motivational approach. His encouragement and positive reinforcement have been a driving force. Jason's openness to discussing all facets of design creates a rich learning environment where ideas flow freely.

RA, Product Designer

Jason was amazing in many ways, but especially being receptive to the huge amount of questions I had and giving me great insight that only someone with his experience would have. I highly recommend doing a session with him, and I look forward to our next convo.

Product Assessment

I start by analyzing your organization and applying our experience to determine your needs and define your audience. Next, I evaluate the usability, accessibility, and appeal of your digital experience to define success for you.

Ithen provide a set of practical recommendations for changes and improvements you can act on immediately.

Our assessment process looks at:

  • Your Objectives: What is your destination? Not just you business goals, but what are you trying to achieve to reach those goals.
  • Your Audience: Who are you building for? I want you to meet and surpass their needs.
  • Brand Voice: What do you “sound like” to your audience? This is key to understanding if you are getting through to them.
  • Product Usability: Why do your products fail? It’s never the user’s fault, it’s poorly thought out design and development.
  • Product Accessibility: Are you open to all? Don’t alienate a potential audience member who need to access your product or system in less common ways.
  • Product Appeal: Is anyone using this? How can I improve your product or system based on your objectives, audience, voice, usability, and accessibility.

Product Conceptualization

Where do you start when creating a new product or system? The big idea is just the beginning. Using Design Thinking techniques, I define and refine your needs, goals, and success metrics to guarantee you aren’t left saying, ""Well this isn't what I wanted!" when the product is launched.

I provide a range of conceptualization workshops and activities, so you can better define your ideas before design and development starts. This is critical to ensuring your vision holds true.

The end product is a fully thought-out proposal you can use to work with design and development teams to make your concept a reality.

Conceptualization Workshops and Activities include:

  • Audience Analysis & Understanding: Who is product for? I find your target audience and determine what they want.
  • Market Landscape: Who is doing something similar? I learn from others to see what is and isn’t working.
  • Design Thinking Workshop: Where do you start? Over several days, I work to define and refine your product or system from the big ideas down to practical solutions.
  • Solution Sizing Workshop: How do you know this will work? A shorter form of the Design Thinking Workshop, I focus on ensuring your product is realistic for your budget.

Partner/Product Selection

???

I am not a full service design company, but I know a lot of companies that are and I keep tabs on the latest technologies.

Let us help you find the best fit for your project that will deliver the results you want within your budget. I have worked on both sides of the table, in agencies and as clients, meaning I can tell when sales is overpromising.

I match our clients with the best partners and products:

  • Requirements Gathering & Vetting: How do I build it? I work with your teams to help deliver clear and but concise requirements to help designers and developers understand what a successful project will look like.
  • Recommended partners: Who will build it? I will help you find the best talent to ensure your success.
  • Recommended technologies: What will they build it with? The technologies you choose need to be reliable and future proof.

Product Roadmapping

???

Roadmapping is a strategic process to map out and prioritize the project goals and initiatives. The roadmap is a living document that aligns, prioritizes, and communicates problems and how to find solutions. It is used to provide clarity and guidance to the team and stakeholders.

I make sure that the line between needs and success is as clear as possible, while also allowing for unforeseen obstacles.

I provide a clear path:

  • A Strong Starting Point: Where do I start? Your clearly defined needs are grounded in an understanding of where you are now.
  • A Step-by-Step Process: What’s next? Each phase is broken down into tasks, milestones, and dependencies for the next step.
  • An Adaptive Path: How do I deal with unforeseen issues? I detail contingencies for when the path needs to change to meet reality.
  • A Vision of Success: Where are we going? I help you understand what a successful outcome for the project looks like.

User Experience (UX) Oversight

Once a project starts, I will be with you to ensure audience needs are always heard. I will work closely with your project managers, product managers, designers, developers, and partners to provide clear and consistent guidance.

Our UX Oversight Provides:

  • Expert Advice: Are we on the right path? I help you feel confident that you are headed in the right direction.
  • Reality Checks: Have you chosen the best options? Sometimes what you want is not what you can get or afford. I explain what is and is not possible without bias.
  • Vision to Reality: Did you get what you expected? When vision and reality conflict, I am there to ensure that what you expected is as close as possible to what you get.

Product or Organization Modernization

To update and upgrade digital technologies, processes, and systems first examine your current needs and desired destination. Our holistic approach to digital transformation looks beyond the screen to help you understand how the online and the real-life experiences of your audience work together.

Our transformation recommendations can be acted on immediately with the confidence that you will not be trying to solve the same problems again in a few years.

Our Transformation & Modernization Process Looks At:

  • Your Objectives: What are you trying to achieve? I look at not only why you want to modernize, but what, where, when, and how.
  • Your Audience & Staff: Who will this affect? I investigate who this impacts and how we can improve their experience.
  • Your Current Landscape: Where are you now? I evaluate your current technologies to see if they should be improved or replaced.
  • Market Landscape: What are others in a similar situation doing? Looking at what is and isn’t working for others is a starting point for a successful transition.
  • Technology Landscape: What products are available? Don’t just look at the market leader. Look at the challengers and how they can grow with you in the future.
  • Your Future Landscape: Where should you go? I look beyond the screen and help you see how the new technology will integrate, both online and in real life.
